8 Ways to Get Into a Flow State

Are you feeling unmotivated or uninspired? Does this send you down a procrastination rabbit hole?

It happens.

One day you’re riding the creative wave with fresh ideas flowing in with little effort and the next you wake up with little momentum to get things rolling again. I’m not saying EVERY day is a “productive” one or even full of creativity. But if you’re a few days or (let’s be honest) weeks into not getting work done or creating for your business, it’s time to take some action and get back into a flow state.

A flow state is an aligned state of being where you’re able to effortlessly create, check things off your to-do list, and feel good about it in the process. Whatever your work may be, getting into a flow allows you to tap into the activity and breeze on through it. Maybe even with some pleasure….

Here are my tips on getting into a flow state with ease

Find Some Movement
Go for a walk, throw on a yoga video or put on your favorite song and dance it out. Movement helps to shake us out of one state and puts us in another. You may not even realize that your body is holding onto tension until you get up and move. I also find that getting outside and into a different environment, as in taking a walk, can really help me to get out of my head and into my body.

Nourish Yourself With Food
Take a break and make yourself a snack. Be present with the process of making yourself something to eat. Does anyone else get excited about their meals after a good grocery shop?? Have something you enjoy stocked and ready to make for when you’re feeling an afternoon slump. Bonus tip, try and be really present while eating. I learned this during a meditation course I took as a way to ground into the moment and it is something simple yet effective to try.

Journal
Are you in your head? Journalling is my tried and true method for coming back to myself. Writing helps to untangle the thoughts in my head, air out the low vibe thoughts clouding my mind, and come to a new understanding. If you’re new to journaling, try setting a timer for 8 minutes and free flow or look up some journal prompts pertinent to what you’re dealing with.

Do Something Tangible
For me to get into a flow, shifting into doing something physical rather than on my computer is helpful. My go-tos are tidying up or organizing something (also helps me to feel productive), reading a chapter of my book (I’m a real book kind of girl), or tending to my plants. Find something physical that you can do for as little as 10-15 minutes that again helps you step away, focus on something else, and tap into a flow state.

Creative Release
Make a mood board, peruse a magazine and cut out images that inspire, draw, write a poem. Whatever your creative outlet, dive in to get the juices flowing. Not a “creative” person, try a new activity that helps you tap into your right-brain. You don’t have to be an artist! Let me repeat, you do not have to be an artist or show your doodle to anyone. Doing something creative just helps you shift into a different state of mind and RELEASE, which is what flow is all about.

Get Grateful
Name 5 things you’re grateful for. Big or small. From your pet to your cup of coffee that morning, tapping into gratitude invites positivity in.

Connect with Someone or Your Pet
Ask your partner for a long hug, go check on your pet for a cuddle, or call a friend. We are community beings and need connection every day. Have you heard that we need 8 hugs a day for survival? Give yourself or your pet a hug to get that necessary dose of connection.

Meditate
I have a standard 10 minute mediation saved on my phone that I use every day, sometimes twice a day if I need it. Meditation helps you navigate through the noise in your head back to your heart. Or for my non-meditators out there, it’s 10 minutes of silence to just breathe.

I hope these 8 ways to get back into a flow state are helpful the next time you’re stuck. Let me know if they supported you in tapping back into flow and ease!
